Ivanhoe

Within a leafy enclave in Ivanhoe East, where treetop views sweep over the Yarra Flats, this residence by SYNC Architecture is complemented by a landscape that both grounds and elevates the architectural plane.

A leafy enclave beyond the threshold

Layered planting animates the street view

Infinity-edge pool merges with treetop views

At the street, a permeable metal palisade fence dissolves the boundary between nature strip and front garden. Staggered limestone stepping stones meander through low plantings of Dichondra repens, Sweet Daphne, Japanese Viburnum and Dwarf Pittosporum, underneath a canopy of Crepe Myrtles. The lush vegetation softens and complements the monolithic rammed-earth facade.

Beyond a clean horizontal built composition, a grand external staircase navigates the dramatic level change between the pool terrace and the tennis court, anchored by a cylindrical tree planter that doubles as a pool barrier. The infinity-edge pool, clad in soft green Bisazza ‘Delhi’ glass tiles, merges with borrowed views of distant tree canopy while minimising fencing.

The rear and side landscaping provide a more locally indigenous planting scheme, complementing the natural setting beyond. Species such as Elaeocarpus eumundii (Smooth-leaf Quandong), Silver Banksia, Correa, and Lomandra provide a flowing, layered backdrop, counterbalanced by manicured Coastal Rosemary ball-topiary. With its southerly aspect, the front garden is conducive to more exotic traditional plant varieties which provide seasonal flowering and foliage contrast, and punctuate the shadier areas with seasonal colour. This predominantly green-toned foliage creates a gauzy filter that animates the interior experience, softening SYNC's glazed facades while maintaining sculptural clarity within.
